Hyun Woo "Chris" Lee

Associate Professor

Hyun Woo “Chris” Lee is a PD Koon Endowed Associate Professor in the Department of Construction Management (CM).  Prior to joining the CM Department in January 2016, he spent 3.5 years as an Assistant Professor at Oregon State University, and 7 years in the U.S. and Korean construction industries as a field engineer, project engineer, and estimator.  He received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2012 and 2004, and B.S. in Architectural Engineering from Seoul National University in 1999.

Prof. Lee’s research interests center on developing an interdisciplinary view of integrating advanced financial analysis, risk assessment, and management strategies, which is used during the delivery of energy-efficient commercial buildings and sustainable infrastructures.  His areas of expertise include building sustainability and energy efficiency, construction safety, and lean construction.

Since 2012, Prof. Lee has published over 40 peer-reviewed journal papers in top-quality journals such as Applied Energy, Automation in Construction, Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, and Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering.  In addition, he has co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed conference papers and over 20 technical reports/booklets.  In recognition of his academic contribution in lean for electrical prefabrication, he was awarded the Early Career Award by ELECTRI International in 2013.

Prof. Lee currently teaches Construction Estimating I and II (CM331&410), Sustainable Construction (CM540), and Construction Operation (CM588).  In recognition of his excellence in teaching, he was awarded the Regional Teaching Award (Region 7) in 2018 by the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC).

Prof. Lee has been actively involved in professional services at the international level by serving on the editorial boards of two prominent journals: Assistant Specialty Editor for Journal of Construction Engineering and Management (JCEM) and Advisory Board Member for Lean Construction Journal.  He has also been actively engaged in the review processes of numerous high-impact journals and was awarded the 2015 Outstanding Reviewer by JCEM.
